Wildlife Volunteer Orientation
2008/3/17 (2783 reads)

Our volunteers are a group of dedicated people who offer their services to help orphaned and injured wildlife. Many of our phone, transport and rehabilitator volunteers also work fulltime. All volunteers receive access to our private online database as well as our group mailing list, which is our primary means of communication.

Phone volunteers assist callers by referring them either to the shelter or to the appropriate rehabilitator (and volunteer from their own homes). Transporters deliver wildlife from the shelter to area rehabilitators and are asked to take a minimum of 3 shifts per month. Our wildlife rehabilitators receive full training and assistance in obtaining the proper permits to care for orphaned and injured wildlife until they can be released.

Spring means babies in the animal kingdom! The Virginia Beach SPCA’s Wildlife Program took in about 1,800 wildlife last year, from orphaned baby bunnies and songbirds to injured hawks and squirrels. The Virginia Beach SPCA Wildlife Program recently updated its website www.vbspcawildlife.com to assist people who rescue wildlife.

The Virginia Beach SPCA’s Wildlife Program is entirely volunteer-based, so if you have a love for wildlife and want to get involved, you are encouraged to become a volunteer before the baby boom!

We will be holding a general orientation, after which 3 classes (transporters, bird feeding, mammal feeding) will be presented. Preregistration for the orientation as well as any of the classes is required. $25 fee for non-members; $5 fee for VBSPCA members.

For questions regarding the Virginia Beach SPCA’s Wildlife Program, please contact Teresa Lamarche, Community Outreach Director at 427-0070 extension 41.
