Six Barns Owls Released
Submitted by runningbird on December 28, 2011 - 11:54pm
On Oct 11, 2011 six baby Barn Owls came into our care. The parents tried to nest in a pole barn but the owners played a radio so the parents moved to a very large sycamore tree. This tree was very unsafe and the owners did not know that the Barn Owls were nesting in the tree. They hired someone to cut down. We recieved a call about 6 baby Barn Owls. I was thinking there shouldn't be any baby owls this time of year. But, sure enough there they were --- looking up at us when we went out to pick them up.
Since there was nowhere to put up a nesting box safely they came into our care. The youngest was only put about 7 days old and the oldest about 18-20 days old. They were all fluff. The youngest didn't even have a hint of a heart shaped face yet; he looked more like a baby vulture at that point.
They were taken to the Vet the next day and he gave them a clean bill of health. Over the course of the next few months the six owls ate about 4,000 mice. Upon release they all weighed about 1 - 1 1/2 pounds. (The proper weight for an adult.)
They were three females and three males in the group. They were released on two different farms in Virginia Beach. Reese Lukei banded them all unpon release. They were all released on Dec 3, 2011.
It was a joy to have them in our care but it was a much better feeling as they were all returned to the wild where they belonged.
